Love and writing

I’ve heard the advice that if you are contemplating writing a book, you’d better REALLY be in love with it, because you are going to be living with it in your life for a long, LONG time…

Mmmm! Cheese!

OK, this is where I must remind you that I don’t eat like this every day. Honest!

Now that I have that out of the way — this is an odd item on the Denny’s menu. Take deep fried mozzarella sticks, add cheddar cheese, and THEN make a grilled cheese sandwich out of it. Are your arteries whimpering for mercy yet? They serve it with some tomato sauce on the side, which undoubtedly make it healthier on the whole.

Oh, and for a modest charge you can add a side of French fries, in case you still needed more salt, fat, and carbs.

Come back, Shaun Cassidy

If Shaun Cassidy was performing on the oldies circuit, he could do a Da Doo Ron Ron/Baby Shark Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo montage.

Come back, Shaun. 2019 needs this.

Firefighter math

If you get to bed after 3:00 a.m. because you were out on a structure fire, and you need eight hours sleep, and there is a call at 10:37 a.m. the next morning, you get up and respond to it because somebody’s got to…

Latitude matters.

I never realized Stonehenge was so much further north than me. I’m at about 43°N; Stonehenge is 51°N.
My sunrise/sunset today are 5:26 a.m./8:38 p.m.
Stonehenge: 4:55 a.m./9:33 p.m.

Narrative Structure

A long and thoughtful piece by Maggie Stiefvater on narrative structure.

“… as a professional storyteller, it’s my job to know what is invisible (and thus costs the reader nothing) versus what is now outside the norm (and thus costs the reader something to process). I don’t mind asking the reader to work for things that are important to me, but I need to know when I’m doing it in order to make sure I can keep their overall load light enough that they don’t lose emotional investment and trade my novel for Netflix. “

Happy (belated) anniversary to me!

I was just reminded that it’s been a year since I started this web site. A bit more — it was February 20, 2018. There have been a smattering of posts since then, but I’ve also posted a lot here from other sources from years predating the establishment of this site. You might enjoy looking through them. I enjoyed writing them.

Fridays

Bagliere Ronald has been posting some of his photos on his Facebook page, and suggested I post some of my poems. I’ve posted some in the past. Maybe I’ll post some more of them.

Ron has his own blog over at https://rjbagliere.com. Check it out!

Fridays

Fridays must be strong
to hold back the surge
of the restless hordes
who wish it was Saturday already

The Simple Things

He liked the simple things in life.
A pepperoni pizza and a beer.
Soft ice cream on a warm summer night.
Long walks on the beach.
The warmth of a red plaid flannel shirt.
Changing to a wolf and howling under the full moon.
